One day they were bound to ask me, “Hey Miss, how are we different from your other students, the ones from your last school?” One day, someone did ask.
Having come from a “normal” school more recently than my co-workers I had a different take on this question. In the weeks leading up to my first class in the prison everyone assured me things would be–well–different. They are not.
Five ways my students are like students everywhere:
1. When I assign anything, they complain.
2. They do not do their homework.
3. They cheat.
4. Whenever they get bored or frustrated, they go to the bathroom.
5. They don’t like school.
